Nicholas Berente, PhD

Nick Berente is the founder and director of The Qube Lab and takes a hands-on approach to ensure that every project is successful and that every student gains valuable experience.

Nick is an Adjunct Professor in Case Western Reserve’s Weatherhead School of Management, where he has taught a variety of courses, including Database Management, Innovation, and Multivariate Statistical Analysis. Nick is also a Research Fellow at the University of Michigan’s School of Information and has authored over fifty scientific publications and book chapters.

Nick received his PhD in Information Systems and MBA from Case Western Reserve University, and his Bachelors from John Carroll University.

Nick is the former president and founder of Pentagon Engineering Corporation, an IT company that he sold in 2002.

Omri Shiv

Omri is a PhD student at Case Western Reserve University. Omri has an MSM as well as both a BA and a BS from Case. Originally from Israel, Omri is now a New York local. A drummer and jack of all trades, Omri is constantly discovering new interests; recently, in the area of design and physical computing.

Omri has been involved with a variety of IT projects throughout his life, including work with IT department at Case’s School of Law and the newspaper, Yedioth Ahronot. Omri has written video distribution systems in ASP.NET, enterprise software for distribution systems as well as worked on personal projects including handheld interfaces for database front ends, a social networking concept for the iPhone, and is currently working on a drum sequencer using a microcontroller and a custom designed plexiglass board as well as a refreshment tweeting device using RFID tags. Proficiency in languages include Ruby on Rails, PHP, MySQL, C# (.NET Framework), and the Processing/Arduino environment.



Caley Shem-Crumrine

Caley is a second-year Computer Science and Cognitive Science major at Case.

Caley first learned to program in Object Pascal at the age of sixteen, and is now proficient in several languages, as well as SQL database management and Linux administration. She has built dozens of websites, specializing in UI design and web accessibility. She is passionate about creating software that is easy to understand, simple to maintain, and fun to use.

Caley is currently working on a large-scale, web-based client management system for Case's Center for Evidence-Based Practices. In her free time, she draws and writes fiction, as well as participating in Case's Juggling and Swing Dancing clubs.

Nathan Camus

Nathan graduated Case with a BS degree in Computer Science and a minor in AI in 2011. Originally from Pittsburgh, he is currently working for MRI Software as a developer on their international accounting team for their real estate management software. While a student, Nathan was a researcher for the Anthropology department’s Tibetan Research Center. His senior year he did IT work for the admission, financial aid, and student employment departments at Case. For his senior project he used JavaScript and C# to port a project from UDK to Unity3D for the School of Nursing. Nathan's favorite QubeLab project is the SpearFysh marketing tool because it taught him how to dynamically generate UIs for the android OS.

Dane Shafer Klink

Dane Shafer Klink received his Bachelors of Science in Computer Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 2010.

Dane is from Brunswick, OH, where he started a free community-based technical support website called PCHelpOut. He has been creating websites and making small games since his middle school years. Since graduating, he has designed and developed numerous iPhone and Android apps.

He is currently attending Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.


Rachid Lamouri

Rachid Lamouri is a sophomore at Case Western Reserve University majoring in Computer Engineering. Raised in Aurora, Ohio, Rachid became one of the first members of his high school’s robotics club where he gained experience with RobotC and a basic understanding of motors and sensors. He has had experience with PHP, has taken an introductory programming class in MATLAB and LabVIEW, and is currently learning Objective C. As a self taught java programmer, Rachid has worked at the Tec^Edge Innovation and Collaboration Center developing an Android application. In his free time, Rachid likes to work on small projects in his school’s circuits lab such as a Rock Band double bass pedal adapter. He is currently working on his first Qube Lab project developing the SpearFysh app for the iPhone.

Lauren Elkin

Lauren Elkin, a Maryland native, is currently a sophomore majoring in Computer Science at Case. She began programming in 9th grade because she attended a magnet high school where she concentrated on information technology. In 2010, she was a National Center for Women in Information Technology Semi-Finalist as well as her high school's Information Technology Unsung Hero. Currently, she is working for Qube Lab as well as conducting research at Case's Center for Proteomics and Bioinformatics. She has worked on several projects, including a compatibility checker that uses Java, SQL statements, HTML/JavaScript, and PHP, a coordinate plane generator in Visual Basic, a Java to PIC Assembly Compiler in C, and more. She also has experience with C++ and Flash.



Dave Allen

Dave graduated and started his career working for Epic in Madison, WI. Epic is the world’s leading electronic health record company and Dave is a developer there.

Matt Briançon

Matt graduated and moved onto a position with Bloomberg in New York City. Bloomberg is the world’s leading provider of business news and data, and Matt is a developer there.

Brian Seeders

Brian is now the CTO of Listener Driven Radio, an innovative local company that puts the control of radio content in the hands of the listeners.

Eric Tutlys

Eric graduated and joined Akamai in Cambridge, MA. Akamai is the the world’s leading content delivery network, and Eric is an associate solutions architect in the Advertising Decision Solutions group.

Matthew McCroskey

Matthew has gone on to work full-time with one of Qube Lab's first clients, Handelabra Studio, and continues to build out GAME.minder, the application he started while at the Qube Lab.

Chris Jennewein

Chris graduated and enrolled at the University of Advancing Technology to receive his Master's of Science in Game Production and Management. Chris plans to graduate in 2013 and enter the game industry.

Karl Steinke

Karl is now employed with Boston Scientific Neuromodulation. He's putting experience honed by his time with Qube Lab to work improving the quality of care for patients who benefit from neuromodulation. He still codes every day.

Anna Bosch

Anna graduated and moved onto a position with Bloomberg in New York City. Bloomberg is the world’s leading provider of business news and data, and Anna is a developer there.

Toby Waite

Toby graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and is finishing an Electrical Engineering Master's Degree this Spring, at which point he will be starting as a full-time software developer at Yelp.

Maggie Dai

Maggie is graduating May of 2012, and will go on to work for Onshift as an UX/UI designer.
